Introduction ------------ After the amazing success of my initial coat colours guide, I've enlarged and expanded it in a whole new format. I hope it will serve as a useful quick guide to some of the who and what of the ECW. Credits are due to many more skilled historians who did the actual reading of musty pages, including Turton, Peachy, Reid, Asquith, Toynebee, Coates and many others including, of course, the great Brig. Young. I stand on the shoulders of giants. Corrections ----------- This is (and always will be) a work in progress. If you find any errors, please email me ( katie at fysh dot org ) with corrections. Particularly; * I'm not quite sure about the way I'm tagging units into commands. * I'm not sure I have the information for the various trained bands/auxiliaries put in the right place. It's my understanding that the trained bands were a militia which pre-existed the war. The "auxiliaries" were further regiments raised during the war, and seem to have been created to shadow the main units. There are references to this for the main trained bands (The 1st-6th all seem to have matching auxls). Likewise, both the Westminster Liberty and the Westminster Aux are mentioned in sources. It seems to me, therefore, that they were distinct units. If anyone knows differently, please let me know. * I've found references which appear to indicate that several people (Hesselrigg being an example) had both a foot and a horse regiment. I'm not sure if this is really the case, or if they had both at different times or if I've completely got this wrong, but I have coat colours for some of these -- and it would seem odd that the coat colours for buff-coated cavalry would have been noted. Hesselrigg's foot is even given a commander, being a Lt Col Birch, which would mean to me that Sir AH is commanding the horse and leaving his foot to be commanded by the Lt Col. As such, I've notated these multiple references as seperate units. * I've tried to notate units with several sequential commanders. There's a good chance I've missed a bunch. Again, please email corrections. Likewise, several of the regiments were "re-raised", and it would be interesting to know this -- it's highly likely that they would have had different colours/coats issued each time. * I've included the names of commanders of units from battles who are below the rank of Col where they're specifically named in sources. It's entirely possible that actually some of these 'units' are merely temporary detachments from a parent regiment and should really be listed as such, but I've been unable to discover this as yet.
