The FTP service on bowl.fysh.org is principally as an additional means (beyond [[SCP]] or [[SFTP]]) for a user to get files onto the machine.
The FTP service on [[river.fysh.org]] no longer allows connections from the general Internet.  The only reason to keep the service at all is that at least on user makes use of it when installing/upgrading software on our web server.  As such access is only available via localhost and the fysh server IPs.


There is a small anonymous FTP area which does also allow uploads in /incoming but no-one but system administrators can get at the files in there via FTP (so the server can't be used as a dead-drop by undesirables).  HTTP is a much better option if a bowl.fysh.org user needs to host a file for others to pick up without logging in.
Users wishing to transfer files onto [[river.fysh.org]] are advised to look into alternatives such as [wikipedia:Secure copy|SCP]] or [[wikipedia:SSH file transfer protocol|SFTP]]).
