[BD] Euros Update

Just back from Southampton this evening, I can catch you up with
events that haven't made it to BD yet.

** Yes, Open and Women won their semis and are in the finals on
Saturday.

** Junior Women picked up our first gold.

** The Masters took the next gold. Very solid game from GB, who
motored away in the second half. Let's remember that some of the
Finnish players were on the team that gave DoG a run for their money
in the Open Final at WUCC 1999.

** GB Mixed built a convincing lead in their final, but around the 15-
mark (game to 17) a couple of mistakes gave the Finns a sniff at
pulling it back. One Finnish point was scored thanks to an
astonishing full-sprint layout Callahan - about the fourth off-man
layout D of the game by their star player. GB found themselves under
immense pressure at 16-14 or 16-15 (can't remember for sure) with the
stands on both sides of the field loudly cheering the Finns in stereo
throughout the point. GB supporters were suspiciously quiet!. But the
team kept their cool and efficiently put the game away. Much
jubilation and another gold.

Okay... you're going to hear about this at some point or other, so I
might as well be the one to tell you. The evening ended with some
shock news. Following an official complaint from the Austrian coach
about incidents during the game (one in particular), GB Juniors' win
against Austria this morning was "disallowed" - for want of a better
word. This means they will not compete in the final tomorrow, and
instead finish fourth.

Although I heard about it from both players and onlookers, I didn't
see the game with my own eyes, so I can't comment further.

I'll put a few photos from the last couple of days of EUC on my
gallery asap. Tom Styles and others will have a ton more for you when
they get back.
