[BD] Re: Tour 0

As far as I remember for the last few years we have had discussions on
this issue and the decisions were always to allow a single slot in the A
tour for a foreign team. Personally I think it is a good idea. I am
positive it is in the Tour rules, and since teams were told the rules
were the same as in previous years it probably wouldn't have been too
much to expect teams to read them...

UK Nationals is solely for UK teams, the UK Tour is about helping to
develop british ultimate as a whole - something that will undoubtedly be
helped by having other good teams mixing it up a bit. I dont like the
idea of closing off the whole of the Tour. Then again, I'm still
struggling to make the move to "Middle England"...

As for the 16th team missing out then I sympathise with them
individually but really - an "A tour" of 15 teams rather than 16? - does
anyone really want to try to convince me that this makes a blind bit of
difference in the grand scheme of things? I hope not* Besides, at
least as compensation you get the realistic chance to win a tournament.

As an aside - am I the only person who thinks we are really overdoing
the whole "fairness" thing in terms of seedings etc.? I think it is a
symptom of being British that people actually prefer to whine about
being screwed by something outside their control so that it is
officially not their fault. In most sports competitions there is some
sort of a draw and sometimes you come up against better teams, sometimes
you come up against weaker teams. I am a big fan of having meaningful
games but I think the classic example has to be the "triple elimination"
at student tournaments which I personally think is ridiculous and simply
doesn't work. I'm not making a big deal of anything but I have to say
comments like "This can destroy a team who had thought they were playing
for promotion" are frankly ludicrously British.

As for a general piece of advice. Every year we have a load of
suggestions and discussions at the start of a season but seldom any at
the end, when we are best able to make changes for the following year.
Lets see how it goes this year and then at the end of the season lets
make sure the Open committee consider any changes for the following year.

Sounds to me like the seeding tournament went well and is a good
addition to the season. Long time since the first tournament of the
year got universal approval - so well done Ad and Matt!

Dave.
