Current keyboard design practice is influenced by historical design decisions that no longer have a rational basis. There are benefits to be gained from a redesign of the keyboard interface. Specifically, this essay challenges the paradigm of purpose-specific keys. A new keyboard design is proposed, based on the principle of context-sensitive key meanings, with a transition mechanism from the status quo.
